Scout quivered as he heard a scratching noise outside the den. It started out faint, and then started to get louder, as whatever was out there gained determination. The sticks Maya had covered the hole with may not be enough.

Maya felt anger and determination flow into her. It wouldn't happen again. "Get away from my son!!!!" The words spilled from her mouth as she lept forward sinking teeth, and claws into a shoulder.

Scout cowered in the back of the den as Maya ran forward to fight it. He was terrified because he knew that whatever that was over there, it was bigger and more powerful than Maya. Maya had become a mother to him, and he did not want to lose another parent.
He watched fearfully as the larger animal shook itself, growling madly, trying to fling the fox off.

In her anger all she saw was a tan pelt. Jackel she guessed. Sinking her back claws into it's leg she scrambled up onto it's back. Sinking her teeth into nexk fat.

Scout watched as Maya attacked the jackal, hoping that it would just give up and leave. They were at a disadvantaged location, considering the entrapped nature of the den. Their safe home had become a dangerous place to be.
The jackal snarled as he shook the small fox. Being on the back, Maya was hard for him to get at, even when he turned his head back to try to bite her. She was out of reach for now.

Scout continued to watch, cowering in the back of the den.
The jackal continued to fight, trying to knock the determined fox off of him. She was biting pretty hard.

Howling in pain, the jackal shook the little fox off of him and bolted out of the den. She had left a very nasty gash on his throat, and he probably wouldn't get very far before bleeding to death.
Scout watched in horror as the fight went on and was relieved to see the jackal hightail out of there. His new mother appeared to be unscathed. He knew he could be safe if he stayed with her.

"Yes," Scout replied. He was quiet for a moment and then excitedly exclaimed "Wow, you really showed 'im! He won't be coming back!" The little fox yipped happily. What a relief, he had been so scared, it was nice to have someone to protect him.
